A New Home for a Chapel Hill Tradition
In celebration of our nation’s birthday, the Town of Chapel Hill will light up the skies with a community fireworks display in Southern Community Park on Thursday, July 4, 2019. In advance of the fireworks, Southern Village will host a community celebration on the Village Green. This year signals a new era for this Chapel Hill tradition as it moves from UNC’s Kenan Stadium to a new home in the community.
Southern Village Green
Market Street and the Village Green open to the public. Feed the family and catch some live entertainment before the fireworks begin. Merchants will have food and drink for sale so you can dine in or grab a bite to go. No fireworks or sparklers allowed.
Enjoy live music on stage from Idlewild South
Have a blast with activities and face painting in the Kids Zone
Show your Tar Heel pride in the UNC Athletics Zone
Southern Community Park
Southern Community Park’s sports fields open to the public. Bring a blanket or chair and relax with family and friends in the park before the show. No pets, glass, tents, alcohol, fireworks or sparklers please.
The fireworks display is expected to begin around 9:15 pm. The pyrotechnics will be launched from Scrogg’s Elementary School, which will make this year’s show visible from Southern Community Park, the Village Green, and many other locations.
In the event of severe weather, we will adjust plans accordingly, with public safety and security as our top priority.
Chapel Hill Transit will operate free, limited shuttle service. Shuttles will run from both the Chatham County Park & Ride lot at the intersection of 15-501 South and Old Lystra Road as well as the Jones Ferry Park & Ride in Carrboro.
Starting at 6:30, riders will be dropped off and picked up at the Southern Village Park and Ride lot on Sumac Rd. every 15 minutes. The shuttle will continue for 30 minutes after the end of the fireworks display.
Village Green: Parking options in and around Southern Village will be the same on the Fourth of July as they are on all weekends with one exception: Market Street around the Village Green will be closed to vehicles starting at 5:00.

The Park & Ride lots will be open
The Southern Community Park lot near the pavilion will be open
The Dog Park lot on Dogwood Acres Dr. will be open
On street parking in the Dogwood Acres neighborhood is prohibited
The Scroggs Elementary lots will be closed

A new location for a relaxed, family friendly experience.

Town staff have created a 3D model of where the fireworks will be visible in areas around the community. These images are estimates about visibility around town. While the greatest view will be from Southern Community Park and Southern Village, there will good views elsewhere.
